Stille - Dark Cell

Room Installation with sound Location: Breitenau Memorial Museum. The Breitenau memorial is housed in a former 12thc monastery which, during the Nazi period, functioned as an early concentration camp and later as an educational correctional centre. 'Stille', meaning 'Silence', was a 4 part sound installation which worked with aspects of the memorial's architecture and history. 'Dark Cell', - located in a blackened room formerly used to isolate uncooperative inmates - applied indeterminate sound just above the threshold of audibility. Sporadic, intermittent and interspersed with pauses, the piece evoked the ambiguity of the word Silence.
